READING GUIDE
Move from a hexagram to
Read the primary figure, moving lines, and relating figure as a bounded reflection—not a prophecy.
Four frames, not one prophecy
Primary hexagram
Begin with the whole situation: the scene you are bringing the question into.
Moving lines
Notice where change is marked. A moving line is not an instruction; it is a place to slow down and check.
Relating hexagram
Read the changed figure as a second frame. It suggests how the situation might reorganize if that change is allowed.
Reflection and next step
Translate the image into one observable, modest action and choose when to review it. It is not a guarantee.
When several lines move, name the tradition
Schools differ on how to order and weigh several moving lines. Some read them together, some emphasize one line, and some focus on the turn between the primary and relating hexagrams. There is no single method we can pretend is universal: record your rule, use it consistently, and return the result to the facts of your situation.
A hexagram does not predict the future. It can help you notice assumptions, tensions, and choices; the next step is still yours.
From six coin tosses to a hexagram
Walk through the three-coin method step by step. Lines are numbered 1 (bottom) to 6 (top).
Coin sums: 6 = old yin (changes), 7 = young yang (stable), 8 = young yin (stable), 9 = old yang (changes).
Each toss combines three coins (heads = 3, tails = 2). The sums, read bottom-to-top, give six line values.
- Toss 1: three coins sum to 6. Tails (2) · Tails (2) · Tails (2). Sum 6. (old yin)
- Toss 2: three coins sum to 7. Tails (2) · Tails (2) · Heads (3). Sum 7. (young yang)
- Toss 3: three coins sum to 8. Tails (2) · Heads (3) · Heads (3). Sum 8. (young yin)
- Toss 4: three coins sum to 9. Heads (3) · Heads (3) · Heads (3). Sum 9. (old yang)
- Toss 5: three coins sum to 7. Tails (2) · Tails (2) · Heads (3). Sum 7. (young yang)
- Toss 6: three coins sum to 8. Tails (2) · Heads (3) · Heads (3). Sum 8. (young yin)
